"Roadkill (Only the Boys Know)," 2020
Night Gallery is excited to announce our representation of Andrea Marie Breiling. The Los Angeles-based painter has presented two solo exhibitions at the gallery, 2018’s Have You Loved Me For the Last Time (Laid Bare) and 2020’s BIG MOOD. She will present new work in Night Gallery’s forthcoming group presentation for NADA Miami 2020.
Breiling defiantly engages the history of abstract painting at the same time that she resists a singular mode of inquiry. In each painting the viewer witnesses her conducting experiments in relation to her own physicality while taking cues from her predecessors such as Action Painting and the Color Field movement. The works emerge out of a scrupulous sense of composition while maintaining a sense of spirited spontaneity; as the critic Barry Schwabsky recently wrote for The Nation, “Despite [a] mathematical approach to structure, Breiling’s touch communicates urgency.” Taking each respective painting as an isolated investigation into color and form, each of Breiling’s works dictates its own rules and logic as it comes into being. Taken altogether, these present an inquiry of great breadth, positing several simultaneous directions for contemporary abstraction.

In 2021 she will mount a solo exhibition at Broadway, New York, NY. She has participated group exhibitions at numerous galleries including but not limited to Blum & Poe, Los Angeles, CA; Achenbach Hagemeier, Berlin, Germany; Wilding Cran Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Harper’s Books, New York, NY; Skibum Macarthur, Los Angeles, CA; Tin Flats, Los Angeles, CA; and 356 Mission, Los Angeles, CA. Her work has been featured in Artforum, LA Weekly, The Los Angeles Times, and LALA Magazine. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
