Night Gallery is pleased to present Ribbons, a special exhibition of new paintings by Andrea Marie Breiling, opening on November 28th at Villa Paula in Little Haiti. Built in 1926 as the first Cuban consulate in Miami, Breiling has chosen this beautiful site to unveil her newest body of work for its evocative atmosphere and rich history, as well as for its more recent emergence as a hub for the city's art scene. Notably, Ribbons is the inaugural exhibition of the newly-renovated Villa Paula.
Andrea Marie Breiling renders kinetic works of abstraction using spray paint, an unexpected medium that has become her signature. Sweeping marks invoke the artist’s full body as complex layers of color establish an ethereal tone. The paintings on view at Villa Paula introduce Breiling’s “ribboning” gesture: sinuous, feathery textures wind across her canvases, at times dissolving into pictorial space. Temporary shifts in the artist’s personal life compelled her to slow down in the studio and interactions between strokes of spray paint became increasingly lyrical, more searching. Compositions expand multilaterally as if stepping into an open field, mapping a striking economy of motion and equilibrium. Breiling nods to Miami’s iconic Art Deco District through vibrant yet balanced palettes, as loose linework demonstrates the dynamism for which she is known.
While Breiling shows impressive range in Ribbons, the exhibition is also a testament to the diligence of style. An artist’s oeuvre may shift in register, but an intrinsic character remains through time, influence, and circumstance. Style is a constant.
