For Frieze Seoul 2023, Night Gallery is proud to present a solo booth of works by Andrea Marie Breiling. This will be the artist's first solo presentation in Seoul.
Exploding with color and kinetic energy, Andrea Marie Breiling’s newest body of work is yet another step-change in evolution for the abstract artist’s practice.
While Breiling’s two previous shows in 2023 found her channeling the subtle and ethereal beauty of Swallowtail butterfly wings, this striking new offering for Frieze Seoul (Sept. 6-9) seems as though it could complement the vivid imagery in Christopher Nolan’s film Oppenheimer. Like a chain reaction of atoms splitting to light up a night sky, each of her imposing 7’x7’ square canvases dazzle with eye-popping high-contrast palettes of electric neons and metallic hues that radiate across the canvas in frenetic patterns borne of Breiling’s unique mark-making with spray paint.
When asked for comment, Breiling noted that she “hopes these new paintings can approximate a cosmic event full of power and energy, exploring the interplay between expansive darkness and loud, explosive, light - almost as if a bomb has detonated in front of the canvas, leaving behind a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors, inky black soot, and stardust.”
Despite the marked shift towards more volatile and dynamic imagery, what remains clear is Breiling’s continued mastery and command of materials and her strong sense of control which guides her in the creation of these nuanced, complex, and explosive works that are very much her own.
