Night Gallery is thrilled to present new works by Andrea Marie Breiling, Awol Erizku, Julia Haft-Candell, Wanda Koop, Rose Marcus, Catalina Ouyang, and Claire Tabouret. Working across media, this multi-generational roster of artists speak to the myriad ways we can conceptualize and engage with the contemporary world.
Using her signature medium of spray paint, Andrea Marie Breiling channels her energy into ethereal works of abstraction that compel the viewer to reject convention and look with renewed curiosity. In his new photographs, Awol Erizku reorganizes recognizable imagery of the natural world, offering an opportunity for critical reflection while evading didacticism. Julia Haft-Candell’s new sculptures expand upon a world of her own creation—referred to simply as “the infinite”—in which she builds an extensive glossary and elaborate systems of symbols as a way to understand the current moment. Wanda Koop’s dreamlike paintings speak to the iconographic power of the imagination, reinvigorating the tradition of landscape painting with bold, surreal interventions. In her new photographs, Rose Marcus continues her decade-long concentration on the act of looking and intensifies the pressure her previous works have placed on public space. In her sculptural work, Catalina Ouyang utilizes form, movement, and relational interaction to expand or contract subjectivity, postulating the body as a politicized landscape. Claire Tabouret’s new works on paper uncover new dimensions of intimacy and tenderness as she expands upon her exploration of the painted figure. Taken altogether, the works provide a complex, passionate survey of the present.
