Night Gallery is pleased to present a recent work by the New York-based artist Tau Lewis in the Platform sector of the 2021 Armory Show.
Lewis' large-scale installation, “Opus (The Ovule),” 2020 is part of the series of soft sculptures and immersive environments that comprise the artist’s fictive universe, T.A.U.B.I.S. Exploring desires for abundance, safety, deep roots, and justice, this otherworldly sculpture maps Lewis’ close relations while embodying utopian visions. Lewis’ works originate in a process of collecting found materials with direct ties to her personal relationships and lived experiences. From these materials, which are often associated with the domestic space, Lewis employs the hand-crafting practices of quilting and dyeing to create her striking sculptural installations. “Opus (The Ovule),” 2020 presents the colossal head of Opus, which Lewis describes as “the power source of consciousness” in her parallel realm. Immersed in falling blossoms, its patchworked tongue extended across the gallery floor, Lewis' installation conjures the new world she imagines from scraps of our shared history.
